Okay, I am the first to admit it – I am not a lover of most technology. I like simple things.
Full disclosure: if I had to choose another era to live in it would be the 1950’s, I miss the days of one remote control for the TV, I hate the sound my cellphone makes when I get a text message, I miss the sound of a good record playing and the crackling noise it makes when the song finishes and I have fond memories of looking up things in my parents’ Encyclopedias.
You get the drift. I’m old school I guess you could say. So imagine my frustration when I walked down our hallway the other day and bumped into Sean installing a “Nest”. It is supposed to be a thermostat that connects to your iPad and gets to know your habits so if you leave the house at a certain time each day, it will stop heating the house, etc. It’s supposed to save money in the long run.
Soon after, I would get love notes from Sean asking me to ‘tell the Nest when you get home’ and other romantic things like that. When I would get home and walk past it in the hallway, it would suddenly light up. It looked kind of cool – just a circle with a light inside. Very plain and simple.
It was neat…except I kept getting the feeling that one day I would walk by and a giant, black pupil would be staring back at me. It was a bit unnerving to be honest. I couldn’t quite put my finger on what was bothering me about all these gadgets that Sean was getting in the past year that hooked up to our iPads until I was telling a friend about it yesterday. She shook her head and chuckled and said if the Transformers are a real thing, we will be so screwed.
She’s so right – our house will definitely be the FIRST one to be taken over by appliances and gadgets if that day ever comes. Everyone will be sadly shaking their heads saying ‘if only they didn’t get the Nest…’
I knew there was a reason why that thing made me nervous!
