Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant Has Been Retired: What to Use Instead

If you came here looking for the Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant, known as SaRA, the tool that used to walk you through diagnosing and fixing Outlook, Office activation, and Microsoft 365 connection problems, it is worth knowing upfront that Microsoft has retired it. As of updates released in March 2026, SaRA has been removed from all in support versions of Windows, and it has been replaced by a newer, centralized tool.

What replaced it

Microsoft's replacement is called Get Help, a single app that combines repair, diagnostics, troubleshooting, and direct access to customer support in one place. For most of the day to day scenarios SaRA used to handle, like a stuck Outlook profile, an Office activation error, or a Teams connectivity problem, Get Help covers the same ground and is already built into current versions of Windows.

If you managed SaRA at scale as an admin

If your organization used the SaRACmdLine utility in scripts or deployment tooling, Microsoft has published a command line equivalent for Get Help, called GetHelpCmdLine, that accepts the same style of commands and scenarios SaRACmdLine did. Existing automation built around the old command line syntax needs to be migrated to the new one rather than assumed to keep working, since the underlying SaRA executable is gone, not just deprecated.

Why Microsoft made the change

Microsoft has described the removal as a security hardening step, given that the SaRA utility had been in continuous use, largely unchanged in its core design, since the Windows 7 era. Consolidating its functionality into a single, actively maintained tool reduces that long running surface area.

If your organization relied on SaRA scripting for end user troubleshooting or device deployment workflows and needs help migrating that to Get Help, our managed IT services team can help you sort out what needs to change. Get in touch if that is where you are at.
