Why a Personal OneDrive Link Shows Up in SharePoint Quick Launch

A personal OneDrive shortcut showing up in the left hand navigation of a SharePoint Online site is a common source of confusion for end users, since it can look like it belongs to the site itself when it is really just a personal link Microsoft adds automatically. Here is how to deal with it.

Why it is there in the first place

Modern SharePoint sites automatically surface a link to the signed in user's own OneDrive in the Quick Launch navigation as a convenience, so people can jump between their personal files and the team site without leaving the page. It is a personal, per user link rather than something a site owner added, which is why site owners are often surprised to find it and cannot locate it in the site's own navigation settings.

What site owners can actually control

Because this OneDrive link is generated automatically per user rather than stored as a real navigation item, it will not appear in Site settings then Navigation for you to edit or remove directly. What site owners can control is the rest of the Quick Launch structure around it: the order of links, headings, and whether the navigation itself is expanded by default. If the goal is a cleaner looking navigation overall, tidying up everything else you do control usually resolves most of the visual clutter people are actually reacting to.

If it is genuinely a problem for your team

For most organizations this is simply expected behavior and not something to fight. If a specific business reason exists to suppress it, such as a highly locked down site where personal OneDrive access should not be visually implied, that is a customization best handled through the site's navigation configuration and tenant settings together, rather than a simple toggle, and it is worth confirming the actual requirement before investing time in it.

If your SharePoint navigation has grown messy or inconsistent across sites, that is a good sign it is time for a proper information architecture review. Our Microsoft 365 and Modern Work team can help clean it up. Get in touch if you want a hand with it.
