If you already know Canadian data residency matters for your organization and just need to confirm exactly where your specific tenant's data actually sits today, that answer lives in one place in the admin center, and it takes about a minute to check.
Where to check it
Sign in to the Microsoft 365 admin center, go to Settings, then Org settings, and open the Organization profile tab. Select Data location. This page shows the region your tenant's core data is stored in, along with a breakdown of which specific services and workloads are covered by that region and which, if any, are not.
Why some workloads can show differently than others
Not every Microsoft 365 service necessarily stores data in the same region, particularly for tenants that existed before Microsoft's Canadian datacenters opened or that added certain workloads later. The Data location page in the admin center breaks this out by service so you can see, for example, whether Exchange, SharePoint, and Teams data all reside in Canada or whether one of them is still associated with an older region from before your tenant was set up.
If your data is not where you expected
Moving an existing tenant's data to a different region after the fact is a real project, not a setting you can flip, and it depends on your licensing and whether Microsoft's Advanced Data Residency or Multi-Geo capabilities apply to your organization. If the Data location page shows something that does not match your compliance requirements, that is worth raising as its own conversation rather than something to solve alone.
If you need help interpreting what your tenant's data location actually means for your compliance obligations, or need to plan a move to a Canadian region, our Microsoft 365 and Modern Work team can help. Get in touch if that is where you are at.
