Axcient Microsoft 365 Backup and Endpoint Protection

Axcient provides two products that address different backup and recovery needs for organizations using Microsoft 365 and managing endpoint devices. Understanding what each product does and how they complement each other helps organizations decide which combination of coverage they need.

X360Cloud: Microsoft 365 Backup

X360Cloud backs up Microsoft 365 data including Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, OneDrive for Business, and Microsoft Teams. It creates independent copies of your cloud data outside Microsoft's infrastructure, enabling recovery from scenarios that Microsoft's built-in retention tools cannot address.

X360Cloud provides point-in-time recovery, meaning you can restore data to how it looked at a specific date and time. This is particularly important for ransomware recovery, where you need to restore to a point before encryption occurred rather than to the most recent state of the data.

Item-level restore lets administrators recover specific emails, files, or calendar items without restoring an entire mailbox or document library. This makes recovery faster and more targeted than approaches that require full-environment restores for small data loss events.

X360Recover: Endpoint and Server Backup

X360Recover addresses backup and disaster recovery for physical and virtual machines, including endpoint devices and on-premises servers. It uses a direct-to-cloud or appliance-based approach depending on the environment and recovery time requirements.

For organizations with a mix of cloud and on-premises workloads, X360Recover provides the coverage that X360Cloud does not: workstations, local file servers, and line-of-business applications that run on physical infrastructure rather than in Microsoft 365.

Implementation Approach

Deploying Axcient typically follows a phased approach. The first phase establishes baseline backups for the highest-priority data: Microsoft 365 mailboxes and key SharePoint sites. The second phase extends coverage to the full Microsoft 365 environment. The third phase addresses endpoint and server backup for any remaining on-premises workloads.

Initial backup jobs take longer than subsequent incremental backups because they capture the full current state of the environment. After the initial backup is complete, ongoing backups capture only changes and run efficiently in the background without affecting user productivity.

Testing Recovery

Backup without recovery testing is an untested assumption. Axcient supports recovery testing in both products, allowing administrators to verify that backups are viable and that restoration processes work before they are needed in an actual incident. Organizations that have never tested their backup recovery often discover gaps at the worst possible time.

Building a quarterly or semi-annual recovery test into your operational calendar converts your backup investment from an assumption into a verified capability.
