How to Open Multiple Bookmarks in a Tab Group in Internet Explorer

Every morning, after a quick scan of my Microsoft Outlook calendar and inbox, I open up my internet browser to take a peek at our social media efforts.

I have over 20 folders in my Internet Explorer Favourites – including one for Social Media bookmarks, which has six links to itgroove’s various social profiles including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, SlideShare, etc.
Eighteen clicks later each site is opened on its own tab for viewing (one click to open a new Tab + one click to open the Favorites menu + one click to open the page on the Tab multiplied by six sites). There had to be a faster way.

I knew that you could open multiple bookmarks in a Tab group in Chrome and Firefox, but I hadn’t discovered how to do this in IE, which is my browser of choice, since I use Microsoft SharePoint on the daily. My Google search results were not returning the results I desired – likely because I was using the wrong keywords so I polled the office, and Colin came to the rescue (thanks mmman!).

The secret is this: hover your mouse over a folder of Bookmarks and an arrow will appear that will allow you to open all websites in the folder in a tab group.

This is yet another example where five minutes of research reduced the effort from eighteen clicks to only two clicks to perform the exact same task.

Although I cringe when I hear the motivational quote: “work smart, not hard” the truth of the matter is the five minutes I will now save every morning with this one productivity tip when compounded by an entire work year (5 days x 52 weeks) … works out to roughly 21 and a half hours that I will save to focus on other things.

What’s your favourite time saving tip for using Internet Explorer?

  1. This used to work in Internet Explorer 11 and I was grateful to find your post. Unfortunately however, it seems that Microsoft decided to “go backwards” with this feature and remove it in some subsequent update. I’m now at I.E. 11 – “Version” 11.0.9600.18638 and “Update Versions” (yes, plural) 11.0.41 (KB4014661) and this feature no longer exists. At least in my version of this horrifically awful program.

    1. Hey Kevin, Yeah… I hear you. I used Internet Explorer from 2014-2015 then switched to Edge in 2016, which did not have the open multiple bookmarks in one click feature. 🙁 So now I have switched to using Chrome full time. It was an adjustment, but I love it. It has a People Profile setting that I now cannot live without. I should blog about that time-saver actually. Thanks for the idea. 🙂

  2. In Internet Explorer 10 I have a feature on it. By which you open many bookmarks in a tab. If you want to get it then browse the site which I give.

  3. Fine way of explaining, and good piece of writing to obtain information on the topic of my presentation subject matter, which i am going to deliver in university.

  4. Actually, the blog is very nice and very highly worded. I have learned a lot by reading this. we hope that you will continue to share such information in the future also.
