Button to Post Document Link to Yammer from SharePoint Online

Have you ever clicked on the “Post” button in SharePoint Online?

While hunting for a “there’s gotta be a faster way” solution to co-worker Sean Wallbridge’s “Copy Shortcut – Gonzo in SharePoint Online!” blog post, I spotted a “new” (to me) button that we suspect has been around for quite some time in SharePoint Online.

I was pleased after stumbling upon it, as it not only offered a two-click solution to grab a URL to a document (now that we’ve said RIP to the  right click > copy shortcut option), but also provides a way to easily post links in Yammer to documents stored in SharePoint.

So far after clicking the button, I’ve been patiently waiting for the link to appear in Yammer. Nothing yet… I’ll perform a few more tests and update this blog post when I have screenshots to show the output in Yammer.

What are your experiences with this button? Rants? Raves? Share your thoughts.

PS – my original, boring, time consuming workaround method to obtain the file path to a document in SharePoint Online, was to highlight the title (from left to right), paste it onto a OneNote page, then edit the hyperlink to grab the URL. It’s one more step than Sean’s method, or this method, so I’ll be switching to save myself time,

  1. So should I imagine that if I don’t see that button then my Office 365 SKU does not include SharePoint Online.

Is there a better way to determine if you have SharePoint (basic) vs SharePoint Online?

    1. I’m not clear on what you mean by SharePoint (basic) – but I will do my best to answer your question.
It is my understanding that there is only one version of SharePoint available as part of Office 365 – SharePoint Online. (I may be wrong.)
I know I have SharePoint because when I click on the “waffle” icon in the top left corner of my screen (when logged into Office 365 in IE) I see a “Sites” button.

Are you able to share what your Office 365 SKU is? That would be helpful.
Also a screenshot of your screen would help so I can figure out what part of your Office 365 environment you are in when looking for the Post button.
If you prefer, we can take this conversation offline – shoot me an email at [email protected].

  2. We have SharePoint Online and we are trying to integrate it with Yammer. We have multiple document libraries with an approval workflow for each. Is it possible, that whenever I upload a document and it is approved by relevant person, it should auto post to my Yammer feed.

    Any help would be appreciated
