How to remove protected view from Office 2013 when downloading documents from the web

Thanks to Louis in our office for digging this one up for me.

I appreciate security, don’t get me wrong. But Office should also be easy to use.  This little annoyance falls under the latter.

If you run into the following error in Office 2013 it’s probably due to the new feature in 2013 called Protected View.

The Problem

Word experienced an error trying to open the file.

Try these suggestions.

* Check the file permissions for the document or drive.

* Make sure there is sufficient free memory and disk space.

* Open the file with the Text Recovery converter.

The Fix(es)

You can select each file and right click on it and go to properties and unblock it there, but that’s just silly if you have a bunch of files.

To turn this feature off completely do the following. File -> Options.

Trust Center -> Trust Center Settings…

Protected View and then turn off the options there.
