Like in MOSS 2007, there are a few things that won’t function properly (or at all) if you are using Forms Based Authentication (which requires Claims now, by the way, so keep that in mind too when upgrading from 2007).
So, here’s a list of key functionality that won’t work if you are planning to FBA your SharePoint (note a complete reference is at the end of this post, on TechNet):
- Search Alerts – bummer, no search alerts
- SharePoint Server 2010 Explorer View – this could be a big one for folks that are expecting the same functionality as they do connecting to typical SharePoint sites and interacting with easy file uploads
- InfoPath Forms Services – this is the biggie for me. Yowch. This would factor into having a real heart to heart with a customer of “how bad do you want/needs FBA”. Sometimes they’ll need it no matter what to meet a business requirement, but it is important to be prepared for what they are giving up
- Search crawling – this isn’t a biggie. Search crawling can be done with your web app extended/AAM’d (zone) and using an alternate authentication mechanism for it
So there you have it. When planning for FBA, plan for what you are giving up as well.

Good post, wasn’t aware of the limitation for InfoPath Form Services, I could see how that could be a showstopper for some.
