One of the elements we plug into every Joomla site we build is an extension called ReDJ. The reason is, we want to ensure a visitor is never turned away. So, by ensuring that if they choose an old (dead) link, or simply mis-type a URL, we would much rather have them end up on our home page, than getting the typical Joomla 404 page. Below is a screenshot of the settings we define when enabling this plug in. Hope it helps others too.
