The best selling Microsoft  Small Business Server (SBS) has been a cornerstone technology for the small business market place over the last few years, especially so with the SBS2003 version.  However, as good as SBS2003 was, the needs of business and business technology have mandated a rethink and re-architecture of the package.  The result is the all new Small Business Server 2008 (SBS2008) product which has now started to ship in volume.

SBS2008 represents a quantum leap over its predecessors as it is built on an all new 64-bit architecture.  The 64-bit architecture allows SBS2008 to break the 4GB memory limit imposed by SBS2003.  This means the applications and services that form the core of the SBS offering can run much more effectively and responsively because they can now be given the memory they need to run properly.  As well, the applications and services have been upgraded to the latest shipping versions from Microsoft  so SBS users now enjoy the benefits that come with using Exchange 2007, Server 2008, Sharepoint Services 3, WSUS 3 and, in the Premium version, SQL Server 2008 Standard for Small Business.  The management wizards and front end tools (like the Remote Web Workplace) have been enhanced for even better functionality than before.  The Premium version is now a “two box” solution to further enhance the performance increases inherent with building on the Server 2008 platform.

Essential Business Server 2008 (EBS2008)

Microsoft has responded to a strong  and underserved need in the market place and has released Essential Business Server 2008 as the follow-on product to the wildly successful Small Business Server.  EBS2008 picks up where SBS leaves off and provides a three or four box integrated implementation of various Microsoft technologies to provide a stable application and services platform for businesses ranging from 76 to 250 seats.  EBS uses the same single Client Access License (CAL) model as does SBS and this gives 76 – 250 seat companies the same great pricing “break” for the integrated Microsoft products that SBS users have enjoyed for years.
