How to embed a Word document in a SharePoint 2013 page using Office Web Apps

I had a dream need today…

What

We are in the process of migrating all of our SharePoint 2010 content to 2013 over the holidays (yep, I’m a sucker for punishment and I need something to do or I’ll go mad)…

During this process, I have built out a Site Map for planning where we are migrating content to (we are using this upgrade/migration to apply lessons learned over the years and moving specific content vs. the good ole database attach…).

So What

The site map was (of course) done in Smart Art within Word.  And I saved it in a SharePoint Document Library. Good enough really. I could simply send a link to this document and tell the guys “hey, if you want to know what is going on and where … go here”.

But then I thought. No way!  We have Office Web Apps 2013 already deployed in our infrastructure and [Warning: Canadian Content, eh?] Office Web Apps are the Cat’s Ass! [End Canadian Content]

I want to embed the document right in a page, using Office Web Apps and create a link that folks can click on and see it as soon as they go to that page.

Now What

Pretty simple (and sexy) stuff it turns out…

  1. You need to have SharePoint 2013 and Office Web Apps 2013
  2. You need to have Smart Art.  Ok, maybe you don’t. You just need a document with content … but if you haven’t explored or used Smart Art – dude, you’re missing out
  3. You need to put that document in a SharePoint library
  4. You then select that document in the library and choose the “embed information” option in the Office Web Apps preview menu
  5. You create yourself a SharePoint page or go to an existing SharePoint page
  6. You edit the page, choose Insert from the Ribbon and choose Embed Code
  7. Paste, perhaps modify the HTML (I wanted it taller and wider so I modified the height and width attributes
  8. And I saved the page – Blammo!

Now, I was going to capture a bunch of screenshots but I figured I haven’t done any video in a while so lets go with the idea that a picture is worth a 1000 words, but a video is worth … er … more? So check out this short YouTube Clip below…

    Is there any way to change the default zoom in an embedded doc? I would like to make it 100% zoom no matter how big or small the web app is.

Is there a way to generate the embed code for office documents stored within SharePoint 2010 or 2013 so that I can use that embed code to surface excel documents on a custom web site using the Office Web App installed on the SharePoint server. I am trying to find out if this functionality is available similar to how we can embed documents stored on Sky drive in other applications.
