Windows Server 2008 IE8 Security Workaround

This quick blog entry was created because I was getting nowhere, trying to find a quick resolution to two obscure errors I was getting, when trying (in my case) to download and extract SQL Server 2008 SP1 (though this should apply to just about any downloaded executable you pull down.

So here goes…

If you attempt to save a file you are downloading to and get this…

You don’t have permission to save in this location.
Contact the administrator to obtain permission.
Would you like to save in the xxxxxx folder instead?

The Solution

Launch Internet Explorer again, but Run as Administrator

But after downloading the file, I still wanted to extract it, and I got the following.

Dealing with Extraction Failed

Unable to find a volume for file extraction.
Please verify that you have proper permissions.

The fix for that, again, is Run as Administrator
