Windows 7 Compatibility … So Very Happy

I’m so happy. I’m running the Windows 7 Release Candidate solely on my production machine and I must say, besides the odd IE8 crash (which happens on any windows machine it seems, though one would have hoped IE would have matured more with IE8) and some strange graphics card ‘flashing’, my experience has been very positive.

Today, for example, I wanted to install the VEEAM FastSCP application (free, VMWare ESX/ESXi transfer utility that can be scheduled) on my Windows 7 laptop, to evaluate it. I don’t know if I love it yet, but it sure looks promising…

So, I downloaded the application and expanded the files…

Then I attempted to run it… and I got this…

Fair enough, I’m not running any of those… So, its time to play with the compatibility modes of the executable (right click, properties, compatibility)

Cool, now it will let me continue… Oh but wait… FastSCP wants to run an account as a service and give it ‘log on as service rights’. And regardless of whether I say ‘Run as Administrator’ or not, I can get no further…

But wait, there was another option there in ‘compatibility’ settings, that allowed me to define the compatibility settings for ‘all users’

Then after authenticating with a local administrator account (can’t show that screenshot, it runs in a different context), I’m able to define everything I need to successfully run this installer and complete the whole dialog, including defining the service account. Sweet…

Ok, I lied, all of the above functionality is there in Vista (just like Mohave! 🙂 – http://www.microsoft.com/windows/mojave-experiment)

But, the Compatibility wizard/checker was also very helpful.
