Ugh, this one took a while to figure out. Microsoft pretty much says that if you get an 80072efd error when trying to login to Windows LIVE Messenger, that it must be to do with your firewall.
Well, I exhausted that effort and proved it useless information.
For me, and it sounds like your mileage will vary, it came down to my IE settings and the fact that I didn’t have Use SSL 2.0″ checked in my Internet Explorer Advanced options (IE6 or IE7). Anyways, that fixed it for me … finally. If you stumble across this and it helps you, you are welcome ๐
