Recently the family and I went on vacation for a few weeks. I brought one hard cover book and one book on my iPad. I didn’t think for a second I would end up using my iPad. Even though I don’t read as often as I like, I love holding a book and feeling the paper as I turn the page. I have a tradition where I close the book and fan through the pages when I’ve finally completed it and I always feel a sense of accomplishment when I’m done (if you read a novel as infrequently as I did, you would understand).
I was really surprised when I found myself leaving the heavy book in our hotel room and bringing along the iPad to read instead. The iBook is pretty amazing. You can actually slowly turn the page and see through it to the other side, just like you would a piece of paper! You can jump to whatever page you like, you have a light built right in and you can download whatever you want in seconds.
I have been fighting this for a while, but I love the fact that I won’t have a ton of books taking up so much precious storage on the shelves. It’s also pretty handy to travel with.
I know this is not a new thing, but it’s new to me and I wanted to share!

You’re not alone – flying back from Edmonton last month was the first time I ever downloaded reading material to my tablet… I found a ton of magazines that I would never buy for sheer cost (Rolling Stone, The New Yorker, WIRED, etc.) Each electronic copy was less than $2!
My only mistake was I didn’t correctly download all of them to my device – so when I turned on airplane mode and lost my WiFi connection I was unable to read my precious arsenal of distractions…
what book did you read?
It was Through Black Spruce by Joseph Boyden (a really good read).
I haven’t thought about downloading magazines. I’ll have to try that too!
