The final piece of my Oculus Rift Setup
I finally got my hands on a Razer Hydra the other day which completes my Rift setup until the DK2 is released. The Razer Hydra was a PC based motion controller released by Razer/Sixense. It looks sort of like a dual wielding Wii remote. As far as I can tell it didn’t sell very well and was canceled, but it’s a very popular control and positional tool for the Oculus Rift. They are somewhat hard to find (where I am) and go for a lot more than they were new on eBay.
As if you didn’t look funny enough as it was wearing the Oculus the Hydra adds a new level of nerd. For most demos you attach one of the remotes to the top of your head to simulate your heads position and use the other one as a virtual hand. This lets you have positional data so you can crouch, look around corners and look over ledges etc. Its amazing when it works, I found myself carefully peeking around corners in Minecraft looking for creepers and ducking under shots in shooters.
I also have a Microsoft Kinect hooked up as well that when combined with the other two devices could lead to some fully immersive experiences, but I lack the office space to really use any of them effectively. (holodeck anyone!?)
My new toy!
My Oculus Rift setup in all its glory.
