I recently ran into a situation where I came across the following error when trying to apply the August 2011 CU to a SharePoint 2010 SP1 system.
The operation cannot be performed on database <Database Name> because it is involved in a database mirroring session. ALTER DATABASE statement failed.
In order to get past this, I had to break (not pause) the mirroring on said database (in my case it was the WSS_Logging database).
I’d recommend you take a look at the following article, which does a great job of describing the issue and the resolution.

Greetings,
I am currently running into the exact issue installing a CU update. Will configuring SP to be aware of the mirroring for the database resolve this problem without breaking the mirror set?
Thanks!
No, you’ll need to break the mirroring. You can just rebuild the mirror afterwards – the SP upgrade just won’t complete if you mirror certain databases. Really, certain databases are not meant to be mirrored in SharePoint (see the link in the article, it explains it well).
