When I mention using “Windows Explorer” in class,\u00a0I\u00a0often find myself in a sea of\u00a0blank looks\u00a0or furrowed brows, particularly\u00a0by information workers\u00a0or management who\u00a0are not fluent in the language of computers.<\/p>\n

For those that\u00a0speak geek, \u00a0this description makes perfect sense:<\/p>\n

For those that don’t, here’s my attempt to explain to explain what the heck I’m talking about, and why it matters to you:<\/p>\n

Think of Windows Explorer\u00a0as a portal or cellar door into the bowels and brains of your computer. Inside\u00a0 you will find a sea of folders and files\u00a0that the computer requires to function. The entrance, once\u00a0well lit and\u00a0easily accessible, was later\u00a0hidden – and for good reason.\u00a0Because unless you know what you’re doing, guess what you end up with?<\/p>\n

\"lobotomy\"<\/a>1<\/p>\n

Haphazardly deleting bits and pieces of “useless” files and folders\u00a0is akin to poking a hole in your lower gut, or worse – giving your computer\u00a0a lobotomy.<\/p>\n

How do I know this, you ask? <\/strong>When I was a\u00a0youth I once took it upon myself to carelessly clean out all the “junk” \u00a0that I decided were cluttering up the joint.\u00a0My computer subsequently\u00a0had a meltdown. <\/em><\/p>\n

Now older and wiser, I treat my adventures in computing like I do backpacking – with thoughtful planning and thorough research. And when it doubt ask an expert!<\/p>\n

So, why do you care about Explorer?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Well, for starters, the next time someone instructs\/suggests you open “it” with Windows Explorer, you won’t end up here, screaming “why no match-y?!”:<\/p>\n

And\u00a0if they say\u00a0“Explorer”\u00a0instead, \u00a0you’ll know that there are two options\u00a0– one a\u00a0browser used to explore the internet, the other\u00a0the elusive “Windows Explorer” used \u00a0to explore the files living within your device and all devices attached to your machine:<\/p>\n

Remember folks, Windows Explorer : File Explorer =\u00a0 poh-tay-toe :\u00a0poh-tah-toe =\u00a0 same thang.<\/p>\n

The other reason you may give a hoot is that the Windows “File” Explorer opens up a world of possibilities in Microsoft SharePoint, when you’re ready to free yourself from the rigid shackles of a folder structure (explanation coming soon!).<\/p>\n
