I received\u00a0the following screenshot from a client the other day. They had recently migrated their intranet to SharePoint Online in Office 365, and expressed concern over the following warning message that popped up when they were working in a list:<\/p>\n

\"sharepoint-quick-edit-warning\"<\/a><\/p>\n

This warning message led\u00a0the end user to\u00a0conclude that the ability to perform bulk edits to list items via the\u00a0Quick Edit was currently disabled. Their login was granted Owner permissions to the site, and no modifications to the granular permissions for the Owner Level had been made.<\/p>\n

Sleuthing time!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Replicating\u00a0the same warning message in my own environment helped solve the mystery. Here’s a screenshot of the same warning message in my SharePoint environment:<\/p>\n

Have you spotted the clue? (Hint: It’s blue).<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Clue #1<\/strong> – There’s a blue box around the first item in your list.<\/p>\n

Clue #2<\/strong> – The Quick Edit button in the ribbon is grayed out.<\/p>\n

Clue #3<\/strong> – A control is another word for a command button.<\/p>\n

Solution:<\/strong><\/em> The reason this “control is currently disabled” is because the Quick Edit View Format is already selected. The\u00a0warning only comes up when you try to click on the Quick Edit button when you’re already in Quick Edit View Format.<\/p>\n

You can tell you’re in the Quick Edit View Format because:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. \n
    the first item in your list has a blue box around it<\/div>\n<\/li>\n
  2. \n
    the\u00a0“Stop Editing This List” button has replaced the “+ New item or Edit this list” button<\/div>\n<\/li>\n
  3. the list items have a table around them<\/li>\n
  4. the Quick Edit Command button is grayed out<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Now, there are instances when Quick Edit functionality\u00a0truly does not function\u00a0properly.<\/p>\n

    Here is a quick summary list of items to troubleshoot that could trigger issues:<\/strong><\/p>\n

      \n
    1. \n
      Have you clicked on an item in the list?<\/div>\n<\/li>\n
    2. \n
      Have you removed any filtering on the list columns?<\/div>\n<\/li>\n
    3. Have you removed all the calculated columns?<\/li>\n
    4. Have you selected a default view\u00a0that is configured to disable Quick Edit functionality?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
