{"id":2639,"date":"2017-09-04T11:58:31","date_gmt":"2017-09-04T18:58:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/itgroove.net\/oh365eh\/?p=2639"},"modified":"2023-02-24T20:29:28","modified_gmt":"2023-02-24T20:29:28","slug":"technology-troubleshooting-101","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/regroove.ca\/oh365eh\/2017\/09\/04\/technology-troubleshooting-101\/","title":{"rendered":"Technology Troubleshooting 101"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Thank science for the internet.<\/p>\n<p>Temporarily felt the pain of not being surrounded by a team of brilliant IT techs to jump to my aid and solve my technology challenges instantly&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230; after 10 minutes of clicking around with my blood pressure rising, and a half second of feeling that all is lost, I hit Google and tracked down the fix &#8211; documented with annotated screenshots by a random fellow on a support forum.<\/p>\n<div class=\"text_exposed_show\">\n<p>The experience reminded me why blogging about solutions to all the technology challenges I come across is so important. If I can help even one person with a post that takes away the feeling of frustration and anxiety that I just went through, it&#8217;s been a good day.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a great trick to helping with technology troubleshooting that was shared with me by <a href=\"https:\/\/itgroove.net\/brainlitter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sean Wallbridge<\/a>. I call it &#8220;<strong>the rule of three&#8221;<\/strong>. If you find three different sources saying the same thing, you&#8217;re probably on the right track to a solution.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s how I used it to find a solution when my new Dynex monitor stopped working correctly and<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here are some technology troubleshooting 101 tips:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>(IMO) Start with Google. Bing or Yahoo will return different results.<\/li>\n<li>Search using keywords. If it is hardware or software related, include brand names.<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t be afraid to use the &#8220;wrong words&#8221; in your search.<\/li>\n<li>If you don&#8217;t know the technical name, use your best guess.\n<ul>\n<li>For example, my search was: <em>&#8220;dynex screen edges cut off&#8221;.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>The page that contained the answer was called: &#8220;pc-to-dynex-40in-tv-via-hdmi-screen-got-cropped-on-4-sides-help&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>The answer was listed under the heading: <em>&#8220;Overscanning &#8211;&nbsp;<\/em><em>when sides of picture go beyond border&#8221;<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Be prepared to click through a half dozen search results.<\/li>\n<li>You will likely have to dig through each page to the end to find clues.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>PS &#8211; Kudos to wildfire who posted the solution to my Dynex screen issue on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.overclock.net\/t\/1166097\/pc-to-dynex-40in-tv-via-hdmi-screen-got-cropped-on-4-sides-help\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">overclock forum here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Thank science for the internet.
