{"id":177,"date":"2013-11-14T12:00:12","date_gmt":"2013-11-14T20:00:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/regroove.ca\/oh365eh\/?p=177"},"modified":"2023-02-24T20:45:59","modified_gmt":"2023-02-24T20:45:59","slug":"clarifying-the-limitations-on-opening-and-editing-pdfs-in-microsoft-word","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/regroove.ca\/oh365eh\/2013\/11\/14\/clarifying-the-limitations-on-opening-and-editing-pdfs-in-microsoft-word\/","title":{"rendered":"Clarifying the Limitations on Opening and Editing PDFs in Microsoft Word"},"content":{"rendered":"<p lang=\"en-US\">In my blog post &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/regroove.ca\/oh365eh\/the-truth-about-saving-a-fillable-forms-as-a-pdf-with-editable-form-fields-in-microsoft-word\/\">The Truth About Saving a Fillable Form as a PDF with Editable Form Fields in Microsoft Word<\/a>&#8221; posted on November 14th, I answered a question that may have led to some confusion with some readers.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\" style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em><strong>\u201cYou can open and edit PDFs in Word?\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\" style=\"padding-left: 30px\">Yes, you can open PDFs in Word, and you can edit PDFs in Word if \u00a0it was made in an Office program and <a href=\"http:\/\/office.microsoft.com\/en-ca\/word-help\/edit-or-make-changes-to-a-pdf-file-HA010275433.aspx\">this is how<\/a>, again, courtesy of the Microsoft Office Support page.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\"><strong>To clarify:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Yes<\/strong>, you <strong>can<\/strong> open and edit a PDF<strong> if the PDF was made in an Office program<\/strong> like Word, Excel or Publisher.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\" style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong>Warning:<\/strong> The converted document <em>likely will not be a perfect match<\/em> with the original PDF. (Page breaks, line breaks, and even image locations may be off.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong>If accuracy<\/strong> regarding format and layout <strong>is paramount<\/strong>, then I would recommend using Adobe Acrobat. If it&#8217;s the content that matters to you, then Microsoft Word will continue to be a good alternative.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\"><strong>No<\/strong>, you <strong>cannot<\/strong> just open and edit any old PDF you come across using Microsoft Word. That&#8217;s the entire point of saving files as PDFs &#8211; to protect them from this very kind of tinkering.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\">Feel free to give it a try:<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\"><a href=\"https:\/\/regroove.ca\/oh365eh\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/11\/pdf-open-word01.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-180\" alt=\"pdf-open-word01\" src=\"http:\/\/regroove.ca\/oh365eh\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/11\/pdf-open-word01.jpg\" width=\"577\" height=\"396\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\"><a href=\"https:\/\/regroove.ca\/oh365eh\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/11\/openPDFWord03.jpg\"><a href=\"http:\/\/regroove.ca\/oh365eh\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/11\/openPDFWord02.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-181\" alt=\"openPDFWord02\" src=\"http:\/\/regroove.ca\/oh365eh\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/11\/openPDFWord02.jpg\" width=\"1191\" height=\"148\" \/><\/a><\/a><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\"><a href=\"https:\/\/regroove.ca\/oh365eh\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/11\/openPDFWord03.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-182\" alt=\"openPDFWord03\" src=\"http:\/\/regroove.ca\/oh365eh\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/11\/openPDFWord03.jpg\" width=\"741\" height=\"192\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\">Now, if you have a PDF that you know was not made using Office program, but is (legally, ethically) yours to edit, and you don&#8217;t have a copy of Adobe Acrobat, then there are a large number of third-party PDF converter tools available to you. Some are free, others cost a few bucks. General consensus appears to be that the cheaper and lighter the tool, the less accurate the results.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re looking at the <a href=\"http:\/\/office.microsoft.com\/en-ca\/word-help\/edit-or-make-changes-to-a-pdf-file-HA010275433.aspx\">&#8220;Edit or make changes to a PDF file&#8221; Microsoft Office Support page<\/a>, I&#8217;m going to stop you now.
