Situation:<\/h2>\n

My itgroove colleague\u00a0Colin Phillips<\/a>, author of the SharePoint MMMan blog,<\/a>\u00a0was experiencing an odd behaviour\u00a0with OneNote 2013 (desktop) after upgrading the operating system on his Surface Pro to Windows 10.<\/p>\n

Every time he opened OneNote, a \u201cdo you want to use this version as the default?\u201d\u00a0message would\u00a0pop-up. When he’d attempt to select\u00a0an option, the program would not remember his selection.\u00a0\u00a0Instead the second message would pop up:<\/p>\n

\"OneNote-Default-Version-01\"<\/a><\/p>\n

When he called me over to inquire if I was experiencing the same issue, I went and checked his OneNote Settings as I knew where the option to make OneNote desktop the default version lived. It was not selected. Made that change to the option and thought the pesky pop ups would disappear. Surprisingly that was not the case. Additionally the change to the setting would not be retained. It would continuously revert back to being not selected.<\/p>\n

Solution:<\/h2>\n

Slightly annoyed, we followed the instructions in the second pop-up. Here’s what we learned:<\/p>\n

Pre-steps:<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. If you get prompted in the desktop version of OneNote for \u201cDo you want to use this version as the default?<\/em>\u201d, \u00a0choose \u201cAsk me later<\/em>\u201d.<\/li>\n
  2. Close OneNote. (Closing the program is critical!)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Steps:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

      \n
    1. Open the\u00a0Windows 10 Settings (known as\u00a0Control Panel in previous versions of Windows.) <\/em>Click on the Start Button, then click on the Cog icon to open the Settings.<\/li>\n
    2. Click on\u00a0Default Apps.<\/li>\n
    3. Click on Set Default by App.<\/li>\n
    4. In the Set Default Programs menu, locate OneNote (Desktop) and click on it.<\/li>\n
    5. Click on Set This Program as Default. When the message changes to “this program has all its defaults” make sure you click on OK<\/strong>. (If you don’t click OK, your change will not be saved).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      When you open the OneNote desktop program (OneNote 2010, 2013, 2016)<\/em> again, you should no longer be prompted.<\/p>\n
