{"id":1053,"date":"2015-03-06T09:00:28","date_gmt":"2015-03-06T17:00:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/regroove.ca\/oh365eh\/?p=1053"},"modified":"2023-02-24T20:34:44","modified_gmt":"2023-02-24T20:34:44","slug":"sharepoint-permissions-what-you-cannot-do","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/regroove.ca\/oh365eh\/2015\/03\/06\/sharepoint-permissions-what-you-cannot-do\/","title":{"rendered":"SharePoint Permissions &#8211; What You Cannot Do"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>During a collaborative consulting session today\u00a0I walked\u00a0a SharePoint Site\u00a0Owner\u00a0through the steps to edit the page of a Document Library.\u00a0The\u00a0purpose was to\u00a0add a Content Editor web part to the top of the page\u00a0so she could\u00a0add a couple sentences of instructions\u00a0to\u00a0reduce any\u00a0confusion her non-technical end users might have.<\/p>\n<p>We compared this method to adding Web Parts to a\u00a0Wiki Page, discussing the pros and cons of\u00a0each approach. The conversation eventually landed on permissions, and I reassured her that Site Members who had Contribute level permissions would not be able to edit the Web Part Page.<\/p>\n<p>That conversation greased the gears in my head and I realized I had never taken the time to\u00a0fully delve into the details of permission levels so now is as good a time as any.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em><strong>OneNote Fans:<\/strong> If you are wondering why you would care about this sort of information, well, my favourite place to store OneNote Notebooks is in SharePoint. Since the site&#8217;s permissions trump those used for sharing Notebooks within OneNote, I&#8217;d consider this useful information.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The following &#8220;Quick Reference List&#8221; is the\u00a0result of reviewing\u00a0the Edit Permission Level pages side-by-side to compare check boxes between\u00a0each out-of-the-box (<em>i.e. not customized<\/em>) permission level &#8211; and noting down <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">what users cannot do<\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong> This information is relevant for <strong>SharePoint 2013<\/strong> only.<\/p>\n<p><em>(Why? \u00a0SharePoint 2010 only has six permission levels &#8211; the Edit permission level was not available until SharePoint 2013.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>SharePoint 2013 Permission &#8211; What You CANNOT Do:<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<h4><b>#1 &#8211; Full Control<\/b><\/h4>\n<h5>Can do everything.<\/h5>\n<h4><b>#2 &#8211; Design<\/b><\/h4>\n<h5>Cannot:<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Manage Permissions &#8211; including assign permissions to users and groups.<\/li>\n<li>Create Subsites.<\/li>\n<li>Create Groups.<\/li>\n<li>Manage Alerts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><b>#3 &#8211; Edit<\/b><\/h4>\n<h5>Cannot do everything above plus:<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Discard or check in a document which is checked out to another user.<\/li>\n<li>Approve a minor version of a list item or document.<\/li>\n<li>Add, change, or delete HTML pages or Web Part Pages.<\/li>\n<li>Apply Themes and Borders.<\/li>\n<li>Apply Style Sheets (.CSS files).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><b>#4 &#8211; Contribute<\/b><\/h4>\n<h5>Cannot do everything above plus:<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Create, manage, and delete lists.<\/li>\n<li>Add or remove columns in a list.<\/li>\n<li>Add or remove public views of a list.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><b>#5 &#8211; Read<\/b><\/h4>\n<h5>Cannot do everything above plus:<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Add items to lists and documents to document libraries.<\/li>\n<li>Edit items in lists and documents in document libraries.<\/li>\n<li>Customize Web Part Pages in document libraries.<\/li>\n<li>Delete items from a list and documents from a document library.<\/li>\n<li>Delete past versions of a list item or document.<\/li>\n<li>Create, change, and delete personal views of lists.<\/li>\n<li>Add or remove personal Web Parts on a Web Part Page.<\/li>\n<li>Update Web Parts to display personalized information.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><b>#6 &#8211; View Only<\/b><\/h4>\n<h5>Cannot do everything above plus:<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Open Items &#8211;\u00a0View the source of documents with server-side file handlers.<\/li>\n<li>Edit Personal User Information.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><b>Everyone can do the following (unless you customize a level):<\/b><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Open a Web site, list, or folder in order to access items inside that container.<\/li>\n<li>View forms, views, and application pages. Enumerate lists.<\/li>\n<li>View information about users of the Web site.<\/li>\n<li>Use features which launch client applications.
