{"id":2471,"date":"2013-12-06T18:59:05","date_gmt":"2013-12-07T02:59:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.brainlitter.com\/?p=2471"},"modified":"2013-12-06T18:59:05","modified_gmt":"2013-12-07T02:59:05","slug":"when-following-a-document-leads-to-heartache","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/regroove.ca\/brainlitter\/2013\/12\/06\/when-following-a-document-leads-to-heartache\/","title":{"rendered":"When following a document leads to heartache"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ok, here\u2019s one I ran into today\u2026<\/p>\n<h1>What<\/h1>\n<p>Users are trying to Follow Documents in a SharePoint 2013 Site Collection.\u00a0 (To learn all about following documents, go here: <a title=\"http:\/\/office.microsoft.com\/en-001\/office365-sharepoint-online-enterprise-help\/follow-documents-to-track-them-HA102785928.aspx\" href=\"http:\/\/office.microsoft.com\/en-001\/office365-sharepoint-online-enterprise-help\/follow-documents-to-track-them-HA102785928.aspx\">http:\/\/office.microsoft.com\/en-001\/office365-sharepoint-online-enterprise-help\/follow-documents-to-track-them-HA102785928.aspx<\/a>).\u00a0 The problem is, our particular web application is not linked to the User Profile Service Application (removed from that proxy) because we are using this web application to share with external users and we don\u2019t want any mix-ups between profiles, social, etc.\u00a0 This is a \u201cdropbox (barf)\u201d kinda thang.<\/p>\n<h3>Clicking on this..<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/brainlitter\/2013\/12\/image1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding-top: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;border: 0px\" title=\"image\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/brainlitter\/2013\/12\/image_thumb1.png\" alt=\"image\" width=\"211\" height=\"36\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>or this\u2026<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/brainlitter\/2013\/12\/image2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding-top: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;border: 0px\" title=\"image\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/brainlitter\/2013\/12\/image_thumb2.png\" alt=\"image\" width=\"237\" height=\"81\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Results in this\u2026<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/brainlitter\/2013\/12\/image3.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding-top: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;border: 0px\" title=\"image\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/brainlitter\/2013\/12\/image_thumb3.png\" alt=\"image\" width=\"548\" height=\"153\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And this (blech)\u2026<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Courier New\">UserProfileApplicationNotAvailableException_Logging :: UserProfileApplicationProxy.GetRawPartitionID has null proxy<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1>So What<\/h1>\n<p>Well.\u00a0 It\u2019s confusing to users that if you provide the ability to Follow a Document in the interface, you should let that happen \u2026 or take that function away.\u00a0 Fair enough. In our case, we have no option but to remove that confusing functionality when there is no underlying plumbing to support it.<\/p>\n<h1>Now What<\/h1>\n<p>Turning off <em><strong>following<\/strong><\/em> is really easy.
