Ok, I\u2019ve run into this enough times, I figured I\u2019d share it.<\/p>\n

What<\/h2>\n

Today\u2019s scenario was that I was using Metalogix Migration Manager (or rather, Content Matrix as it is now called) to move a SharePoint Site Collection to a new farm. During this move, SharePoint Publishing got, er, buggered, for lack of a better word.<\/p>\n

My content came across, but no matter what I did, I could not, in the GUI or through tricks in SharePoint Designer (renaming libraries and other garbage suggested out there on the Interweb), I could not enable the SharePoint Server Publishing Infrastructure Feature.<\/p>\n

So What<\/h2>\n

Well, this is a drag.\u00a0 I can\u2019t have a pages library and layouts, I can\u2019t use navigation and frankly, I don\u2019t like my stuff \u2018broken\u2019 either. Just not cricket and not something I like to carry on with me like herpes<\/span>, er, luggage.\u00a0 And, I don\u2019t like to lose\u2026<\/p>\n

Now What<\/h2>\n

Here are some of the errors I encountered today, hoping Google helps others find this as well\u2026 Note, the errors below depended on what I was trying to do at the time (various other techniques that ultimately didn\u2019t help):<\/p>\n

Provisioning did not succeed. Details: Failed to provision all permission settings. OriginalException: The system cannot find the file specified. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80070002)<\/span><\/p>\n

And<\/p>\n

Failed to instantiate file “ContentQueryMain.xsl” from module “XSLStyleSheets”: The specified list does not exist.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Dude, What\u2019s the Fix?<\/h2>\n

Note, I\u2019ve come across this in both SharePoint 2010 and 2013 and suspect considering the Feature ID is the same, in 2007 this probably also applies.<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Take a Backup \u2013 I\u2019m not responsible for your data, you are\u2026<\/li>\n
  2. Stop trying to click Activate in your Site Collection Features Admin for the SharePoint Server Publishing Infrastructure feature.\u00a0 As Einstein says, the definition of being a nut job is trying the same thing over and over and expecting the same result\u2026<\/li>\n
  3. Go to your SharePoint Server\u2019s PowerShell and Deactivate Publishing for your site collection from the PowerShell command line and reactivate it.\u00a0 It will tell you that it wasn\u2019t activated (gee, that\u2019s what the GUI said too). But if you have \u2018remnants\u2019 of publishing kicking around, you\u2019ll need to use the PowerShell equivalent to clean house and then reactivate it. Here goes:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    To Deactivate<\/h4>\n

    (Do it, you know you want to and will have to)<\/p>\n

    stsadm -o deactivatefeature -id f6924d36-2fa8-4f0b-b16d-06b7250180fa -url “<\/u><\/span><\/span>http:\/\/yoursharepointurl\/sites\/<\/u><\/span><\/a>sitecollection”<\/u><\/span> -force<\/span><\/p>\n

    You\u2019ll no doubt, if you came across this post, get a notice saying it wasn\u2019t enabled\u2026 something to the effect of \u201c”Feature ‘f6924d36-2fa8-4f0b-b16d-06b7250180fa’ is not activated at this scope”<\/p>\n

    To Activate<\/h4>\n

    Ok, time to flip it back on<\/p>\n

    stsadm -o activatefeature -id f6924d36-2fa8-4f0b-b16d-06b7250180fa -url “<\/u><\/span><\/span>http:\/\/yoursharepointurl\/sites\/<\/u><\/span><\/a>sitecollection”<\/u><\/span> \u2013force<\/span><\/p>\n

    And Viola!\u00a0 It\u2019s Activated<\/h2>\n

    Now you can turn on your site publishing feature if you want your \/pages library and Navigation should be back as well.<\/p>\n
