However, I can now honestly say that <em><strong>most of it was my fault<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0 And the reason is, I signed up for the P1 plan which has no human support (just community\/forum posts) and that I was simply too impatient.<\/p>\n<p>Basically, between trying to rush DNS and trying to coordinate people (connecting to 6 family members so I could migrate their mailboxes and their phones, was maddening).<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what I learned, because otherwise the service is pretty slick.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><u><strong>Be patient<\/strong><\/u>. When they say something could take up to 72 hours, they mean it. Even DNS.\u00a0 I was furiously proving to them that my DNS settings had propagated to every DNS server I tested against but my domain wouldn\u2019t verify.\u00a0 This is because they have internal processes (and scripts and such) and their own internal systems take as much time as their process does.\u00a0 <strong>Lesson<\/strong>: No client migration should start on a Friday night and be expected to be done on the Monday AM.\u00a0 Instead, start the DNS, etc. process a week in advance, get your ducks in a row and then schedule the actual cutover<\/li>\n<li>You can migrate email in pieces but the deal is this\u2026 all mail needs to go through your old system and then get routed to the new system, if you are moving mailboxes one at a time (you can\u2019t do Office 365, forwarded back to on premise) as there is no way to provision an upstream routing path \u2013 no big deal, but just know this is true<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Why I Did It<\/h2>\n<p>Because I\u2019m Bat Shit Crazy.\u00a0 And\u2026<\/p>\n<p>While a family SharePoint site collection is in the cards and Lync could be fun, I did it because I\u2019m tired of supporting POP3 for family members. Email on desktops get lost, crappy anti-spam\/antivirus and now they can access ALL (25gb worth) of their email from their phones, webmail and Outlook 2007 or better.\u00a0 Sweet. <u>My time is worth that<\/u>.<\/p>\n<h2>Settings You\u2019ll Want To Know<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/portal.microsoftonline.com\">https:\/\/portal.microsoftonline.com<\/a> \u2013 to administer your setup, this is the primary URL<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"http:\/\/network-tools.com\" href=\"http:\/\/network-tools.com\">http:\/\/network-tools.com<\/a> \u2013 this is the DNS website Microsoft recommends you use for validating your DNS.\u00a0 While there are hundreds out there, you might as well check against this one, as that is where their tech support is looking<\/li>\n<li>The name servers to point your domain at Microsoft (after you have verified the domain, you can configure either a bogus MX record or a TXT record \u2013 be patient when configuring this!!) will be: <strong>ns1.bdm.microsoftonline.com<\/strong> <em>and<\/em> <strong>ns2.bdm.microsoftonline.com<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>If you are like me, you\u2019ll want to have a custom Webmail alias that you can remember, such as webmail.wallbridge.com. If you do, you\u2019ll want to create a CNAME record that points webmail.wallbridge.com to <strong>Mail.Office365.com<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>On to some random notes and screenshots<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>I went for P1 ($6\/user a month for up to 50 users, 1 shared SharePoint Site Collection, OWA (Office Web Apps), Lync, etc. and of course, 25GB mailboxes per user with Webmail, ActiveSync and Outlook Anywhere<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/brainlitter\/2012\/07\/image.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-top: 0px;border-width: 0px\" title=\"image\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/brainlitter\/2012\/07\/image_thumb.png\" alt=\"image\" width=\"244\" height=\"237\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You can create your own records when\/if you decide to have Microsoft host the DNS for the domain (you don\u2019t have to, but considering all the records involved, you might just want to).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/brainlitter\/2012\/07\/SNAGHTML211eec7e.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-top: 0px;border-width: 0px\" title=\"SNAGHTML211eec7e\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/brainlitter\/2012\/07\/SNAGHTML211eec7e_thumb.png\" alt=\"SNAGHTML211eec7e\" width=\"240\" height=\"99\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/brainlitter\/2012\/07\/SNAGHTML213fc88a.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-top: 0px;border-width: 0px\" title=\"SNAGHTML213fc88a\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/brainlitter\/2012\/07\/SNAGHTML213fc88a_thumb.png\" alt=\"SNAGHTML213fc88a\" width=\"455\" height=\"307\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You can have several domains pointed to the same account as I did (wallbridge.com, gsaautorentals.com and sidneycars.com \u2013 the latter two being the domains for my dad\u2019s business)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/brainlitter\/2012\/07\/SNAGHTML211da782.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-top: 0px;border-width: 0px\" title=\"SNAGHTML211da782\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/brainlitter\/2012\/07\/SNAGHTML211da782_thumb.png\" alt=\"SNAGHTML211da782\" width=\"380\" height=\"225\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>wallbridge.<strong>onmicrosoft.com<\/strong> is the domain that you start with and as such, you can do lots of testing with.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li>If you find you can\u2019t configure an Outlook account (autodiscover works a treat in Outlook and iPhones), it is probably because the users account wants a password reset.\u00a0 Login to <a href=\"https:\/\/portal.microsoftonline.com\">https:\/\/portal.microsoftonline.com<\/a> as the user to get prompted for the password change and then retry Outlook setup again.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>SLA\u2019s are transparent and reasonably honest<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/brainlitter\/2012\/07\/SNAGHTML2120e7bd.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-top: 0px;border-width: 0px\" title=\"SNAGHTML2120e7bd\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/brainlitter\/2012\/07\/SNAGHTML2120e7bd_thumb.png\" alt=\"SNAGHTML2120e7bd\" width=\"244\" height=\"98\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/brainlitter\/2012\/07\/SNAGHTML21214eb9.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-top: 0px;border-width: 0px\" title=\"SNAGHTML21214eb9\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/brainlitter\/2012\/07\/SNAGHTML21214eb9_thumb.png\" alt=\"SNAGHTML21214eb9\" width=\"244\" height=\"131\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You can run Powershell against your setup. Yep, its true.\u00a0 Check out my OneNote for the settings I needed to do to force FOPE (Microsoft\u2019s Forefront Anti-Spam platform) to trust my domain for inbound email after a (too quick) DNS move<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>You <u>Can<\/u> Have Forwarders\/Aliases that deliver email to other systems<\/h2>\n<p>But it\u2019s a little tricky\u2026<\/p>\n<p>For example, my sister didn\u2019t want to be on the platform but she has had a wallbridge.com email for years.\u00a0 So I wanted to send <a href=\"mailto:joeblow@wallbridge.com\">joeblow@wallbridge.com<\/a> (her name isn\u2019t Joe BTW <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wlEmoticon wlEmoticon-winkingsmile\" style=\"border-style: none\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/brainlitter\/2012\/07\/wlEmoticon-winkingsmile.png\" alt=\"Winking smile\" \/>) to <a href=\"mailto:joeblow@gmail.com\">joeblow@gmail.com<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>The trick is four (and a 1\/2) things:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1. Create an external contact<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/brainlitter\/2012\/07\/SNAGHTML2142bd44.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-top: 0px;border-width: 0px\" title=\"SNAGHTML2142bd44\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/brainlitter\/2012\/07\/SNAGHTML2142bd44_thumb.png\" alt=\"SNAGHTML2142bd44\" width=\"240\" height=\"125\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>2. Create a Distribution List (yep, even for just one person)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/brainlitter\/2012\/07\/SNAGHTML2143cf8c.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-top: 0px;border-width: 0px\" title=\"SNAGHTML2143cf8c\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/brainlitter\/2012\/07\/SNAGHTML2143cf8c_thumb.png\" alt=\"SNAGHTML2143cf8c\" width=\"240\" height=\"97\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>3. Add the External Contact as a Recipient (This is the 1\/2 as well by the way, in that you will want to remove your admin account as a member, or plan on getting everyone\u2019s spam as you\u2019ll be added by default)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/brainlitter\/2012\/07\/SNAGHTML21456d13.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-top: 0px;border-width: 0px\" title=\"SNAGHTML21456d13\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/brainlitter\/2012\/07\/SNAGHTML21456d13_thumb.png\" alt=\"SNAGHTML21456d13\" width=\"240\" height=\"227\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>4. You then need to allow the Distribution Group to accept emails from outside Office 365 (and this is why you need the Distribution Group, because you can\u2019t set this on the External Contact). Capiche?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/brainlitter\/2012\/07\/SNAGHTML2145ac82.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-top: 0px;border-width: 0px\" title=\"SNAGHTML2145ac82\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/brainlitter\/2012\/07\/SNAGHTML2145ac82_thumb.png\" alt=\"SNAGHTML2145ac82\" width=\"240\" height=\"229\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Summary<\/h2>\n<p>Office 365 is Dope Yo.\u00a0 Sure you can have 150 POP3 accounts for $5 a month.
