{"id":711,"date":"2013-03-12T11:48:04","date_gmt":"2013-03-12T18:48:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mmman.itgroove.net\/?p=711"},"modified":"2023-02-24T21:48:48","modified_gmt":"2023-02-24T21:48:48","slug":"stop-hating-apps-because-now-they-can-live-happily-on-your-desktop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/regroove.ca\/archive\/2013\/03\/12\/stop-hating-apps-because-now-they-can-live-happily-on-your-desktop\/","title":{"rendered":"Stop Hating Apps, Because Now They Can Live Happily on Your Desktop"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>What\u2019s that?&nbsp; You hate apps?&nbsp; I\u2019m willing to bet that if you could only share a Windows 8 App\u2019s workspace with the rest of your desktop, you\u2019d actually find that many of them can be quite useful.&nbsp; Well, stop dreaming about that day, because it\u2019s here.<\/p>\n<p>The solution: ModernMix by Stardock (<a title=\"https:\/\/www.stardock.com\/products\/modernmix\/\" href=\"http:\/\/www.stardock.com\/products\/modernmix\/\">http:\/\/www.stardock.com\/products\/modernmix\/<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Yes, now you can launch apps, play games, share that experience with the rest of your desktop, and basically do everything you\u2019d actually like to be able to do with Windows 8, that until now, you\u2019ve been stuck hating.<\/p>\n<p>Take a look below, as you can see, I\u2019ve got my whole desktop open (with a maximized browser in the background \u2013 FireFox), and two windows 8 apps open (Google, and MS Mahjong).&nbsp; The windows are resizable, can be minimized and maximized (just like normal desktop applications), and basically operate just like any other desktop application otherwise would.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mmman.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/mmman\/2013\/03\/image45.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"image\" style=\"border-top: 0px;border-right: 0px;border-bottom: 0px;padding-top: 0px;padding-left: 0px;border-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/mmman.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/mmman\/2013\/03\/image_thumb42.png\" width=\"644\" height=\"413\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As you can see from the taskbar (above), you can even have the app icon show up on the taskbar container for an app (yes, pinning works too).<\/p>\n<p>You can easily toggle between \u201capp mode\u201d and \u201cdesktop mode\u201d by simply going into the overlay in the top right, and changing the setting (see below).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mmman.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/mmman\/2013\/03\/image46.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"image\" style=\"padding-top: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/mmman.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/mmman\/2013\/03\/image_thumb43.png\" width=\"129\" height=\"112\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There are two downsides to this presently.&nbsp; One is, it\u2019s still in Beta, so it\u2019s not officially version 1.0 yet.&nbsp; And secondly, the app is paid ($4.99), but I think it\u2019s well worth it at such a low price.&nbsp; There\u2019s a 30 day trial available, and that\u2019s what I\u2019m taking advantage of right now.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mmman.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/mmman\/2013\/03\/image47.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"image\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/mmman.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/mmman\/2013\/03\/image_thumb44.png\" width=\"687\" height=\"207\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>At this point, day 2 of my trial, I can already tell this is going to be worth it.&nbsp; <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wlEmoticon wlEmoticon-smile\" alt=\"Smile\" src=\"http:\/\/mmman.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/mmman\/2013\/03\/wlEmoticon-smile1.png\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What\u2019s that?&nbsp; You hate apps?&nbsp; I\u2019m willing to bet that if you could only share a Windows 8 App\u2019s workspace with the rest of your desktop, you\u2019d actually find that many of them can be quite useful.&nbsp; Well, stop dreaming about that day, because it\u2019s here.
