I threw this together for a customer, and figured I\u2019d blog it, as it\u2019s generally fairly useful to remember how to do this again in the future.  The steps below help to guide you through the process of adding the \u201cLink to a Document\u201d content type to a document library. <\/p>\n

1) Go into the Site Actions -> View All Site Content, and find the library you want to change <\/p>\n

2) Go into the Library Settings for that library <\/p>\n

3) Go into \u201cAdvanced Settings\u201d, and choose \u201cAllow management of content type\u201d \u2013 Select \u201cYes\u201d, when done, click \u201cOK\u201d <\/p>\n

4) A new option will now be available on the Library Settings page, \u201cContent Types\u201d.  Choose \u201cAdd from existing site content types\u201d. <\/p>\n

5) From the list on the left, find \u201cLink to a Document\u201d and add it to the list on the right. <\/p>\n

6) You will now have 2 content types, including \u201cLink to a Document\u201d.  Exit the settings page. <\/p>\n

7) In your library, you will now have the ability to add a link to a document as a library \u201citem\u201d.  Choose this, and let\u2019s try it out. <\/p>\n

8) Basically what this allows you to do is to create a name \/ value pair, where the \u201cDocument Name\u201d is what will show up in the library as the \u201cname\u201d and the URL is basically any reference that you want it to be (it could even link to google.com – for all SharePoint cares).  What you\u2019ll likely want this to be is a URL to a document in the other site\u2019s document library. <\/p>\n

9) Finally, in case you didn\u2019t know, the easiest way to get the Document URL for a file is to go to the file and choose \u201cEmail a link\u201d.  This will pop open a new email message, but it\u2019s the easiest means of getting the URL to a document.  Just steal the URL from the email and throw the email away.  Finally, paste that value into the dialog above, and you\u2019re all set! <\/p>\n
