{"id":2436,"date":"2014-08-08T16:00:00","date_gmt":"2014-08-08T23:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/?p=1676"},"modified":"2023-02-24T21:39:54","modified_gmt":"2023-02-24T21:39:54","slug":"o365outlook-web-app-owa-for-your-phone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/regroove.ca\/archive\/2014\/08\/08\/o365outlook-web-app-owa-for-your-phone\/","title":{"rendered":"O365\u2013Outlook Web App (OWA) for your phone"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 and I love it.\u00a0 I upgraded to this from an iPhone 4 (which I also loved but the screen was just too small).\u00a0 The Galaxy is a really nice unit but the email client isn\u2019t as \u201cpretty\u201d or quite as fluid as the one I had on my iPhone and I really dislike the Calendar app.\u00a0 There\u2019s nothing \u201cwrong\u201d with either app, they just doesn\u2019t have quite as polished a \u201cfeel\u201d as the iPhone.\u00a0 But I never considered looking for a replacement as it \u201cworks\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Sean mentioned to me that he had installed the Outlook Web App (OWA) on his iPhone as he has \u201cissues\u201d with ActiveSync.\u00a0 I wondered what OWA might offer so I downloaded the Android version to my phone (NOTE:\u00a0 OWA for Android is picky about your Android version; it installed happily on my Galaxy S4 but doesn\u2019t even show up in the Playstore for my older Galaxy Tab 10.1.\u00a0 The Outlook.com app that shows up for my tab is NOT OWA.) The install went pretty quickly and I ended up with one more icon my phone.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2014\/08\/Screenshot_2014-08-08-15-21-25.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding-top: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;border: 0px\" title=\"Screenshot_2014-08-08-15-21-25\" src=\"http:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2014\/08\/Screenshot_2014-08-08-15-21-25_thumb.png\" alt=\"Screenshot_2014-08-08-15-21-25\" width=\"139\" height=\"244\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Tapping on the OWA icon brings up the following (after the initial setup screen which basically asks for email address and password):<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2014\/08\/Screenshot_2014-08-08-15-22-59.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding-top: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;border: 0px\" title=\"Screenshot_2014-08-08-15-22-59\" src=\"http:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2014\/08\/Screenshot_2014-08-08-15-22-59_thumb.png\" alt=\"Screenshot_2014-08-08-15-22-59\" width=\"139\" height=\"244\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Hmmm, all very \u201cModern\u201d and Windows Phone like.\u00a0 But that\u2019s okay.\u00a0 Tapping on the Outlook icon brings up the following:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2014\/08\/Screenshot_2014-08-08-15-23-21.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding-top: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;border: 0px\" title=\"Screenshot_2014-08-08-15-23-21\" src=\"http:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2014\/08\/Screenshot_2014-08-08-15-23-21_thumb.png\" alt=\"Screenshot_2014-08-08-15-23-21\" width=\"139\" height=\"244\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The breadcrumb across the top of the screen scrolls left\/right with your finger and provides a quick way to get to the most common categories of email, pretty self explanatory.\u00a0 It\u2019s pretty fluid to move up and down the screen, as well.\u00a0 Tapping on an item opens like the following:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2014\/08\/Screenshot_2014-08-08-15-31-14.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding-top: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;border: 0px\" title=\"Screenshot_2014-08-08-15-31-14\" src=\"http:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2014\/08\/Screenshot_2014-08-08-15-31-14_thumb.png\" alt=\"Screenshot_2014-08-08-15-31-14\" width=\"139\" height=\"244\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The reply button is the funny curved double arrow on upper right of screen which then opens to give you choices like reply, reply all and forward.\u00a0 The ellipses opens choices suchsas mark as unread, flag, mark as junk and delete.\u00a0 More choices at bottom of screen echo some of the choices on the upper ellipses as well as provide delete, move to other folder and back functions.\u00a0 Operation is pretty fluid, at least on my S4.\u00a0 The reply function shows the following screen (similar to a new email):<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2014\/08\/Screenshot_2014-08-08-15-36-10.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding-top: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;border: 0px\" title=\"Screenshot_2014-08-08-15-36-10\" src=\"http:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2014\/08\/Screenshot_2014-08-08-15-36-10_thumb.png\" alt=\"Screenshot_2014-08-08-15-36-10\" width=\"139\" height=\"244\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>All pretty standard stuff.<\/p>\n<p>On the main email screen you can swipe left or right on an individual email and you then get some choices:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2014\/08\/Screenshot_2014-08-08-15-23-36.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding-top: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;border: 0px\" title=\"Screenshot_2014-08-08-15-23-36\" src=\"http:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2014\/08\/Screenshot_2014-08-08-15-23-36_thumb.png\" alt=\"Screenshot_2014-08-08-15-23-36\" width=\"139\" height=\"244\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The icons are pretty self-explanatory (I think) and I have to say I really like this particular way of getting at \u201cthings to do\u201d with a given email.\u00a0 Again, it\u2019s all fast and fluid on my S4.\u00a0 And I can pull up options from the bottom of the screen that also help make life easy:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2014\/08\/Screenshot_2014-08-08-15-23-46.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding-top: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;border: 0px\" title=\"Screenshot_2014-08-08-15-23-46\" src=\"http:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2014\/08\/Screenshot_2014-08-08-15-23-46_thumb.png\" alt=\"Screenshot_2014-08-08-15-23-46\" width=\"139\" height=\"244\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>From the main screen I can select Calendar and then get different views:<\/p>\n<p><a border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And, of course, there is the familiar Calendar entry:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2014\/08\/Screenshot_2014-08-08-15-43-59.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding-top: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;border: 0px\" title=\"Screenshot_2014-08-08-15-43-59\" src=\"http:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2014\/08\/Screenshot_2014-08-08-15-43-59_thumb.png\" alt=\"Screenshot_2014-08-08-15-43-59\" width=\"139\" height=\"244\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I won\u2019t go into Contacts but it is more of the same.<\/p>\n<p>On my S4 OWA happily runs in the background and uses the standard \u201calerts\u201d function of the phone to surface alerts on the screen (across top of screen).\u00a0 It seems to be a very \u201cfluid\u201d app and it just \u201cfeels\u201d better in hand than the standard apps provided on my S4.\u00a0 It\u2019s not anything earth shattering, by any means, but it does provide some nice functionality that is more in keeping with the feel of OWA out of O365 and Outlook on a PC.\u00a0 I\u2019m still learning how to tweak it but I have removed my O365\/Exchange accounts from the default S4 apps and am now living solely with OWA for email, calendar and contacts.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re a fan of the \u201cModernUI\u201d look and feel and\/or you just aren\u2019t happy with the default email and calendar apps on your Android (and I expect iPhone\/iPad as the OWA app on those platforms is very similar to what I\u2019ve described here) then you might want to give OWA a try (keeping in mind my earlier caveat about OWA vs outlook.com app on Android).\u00a0 It fits well with the other apps Microsoft makes available for your phone\/tablet and I find I\u2019m liking them more and more which also means I need my PC(\u2018s) less and less.\u00a0 And like everything else O365 related the apps are being improved continuously.\u00a0 That is <em>not<\/em> something that can be said about the apps on my Galaxy \u2026<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I
