the \u201ceasy\u201d way"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Site-to-site VPN connections are very easy to create between Sonicwall devices, almost ridiculously easy.&#160; Here\u2019s how to do it.<\/p>\n<p>Sonicwall let\u2019s you set up site-to-site VPN\u2019s in a number of ways.&#160; I find the easiest and fastest way is to use the procedure that Sonicwall recommends when one of the VPN gateway Sonicwalls receives its WAN address via DHCP <em>even<\/em> if both of your gateway devices have static addresses.&#160; The reason I do this is the process pretty much never fails, is easy to troubleshoot and can be completed in minutes.<\/p>\n<p>To use this process you have to decide on one Sonicwall as the \u201cmaster\u201d as it will always \u201clisten\u201d for VPN connections; the other Sonicwall will be the initiator.&#160; If you are going to have multiple remote sites coming back to a main site then it only makes sense to make the main site the master.&#160; If you only have two units involved then pick one as the master.<\/p>\n<p>On the master unit perform the following steps:<\/p>\n<p>Go to VPN \u2013&gt; Settings.&#160; On that screen make sure <strong>Enable VPN<\/strong> is ticked and then change the \u201cUnique Firewall Identifier\u201d to be something that is easily identifiable like \u201cMASTER\u201d or \u201cVICTORIA FIREWALL\u201d or whatever and click the <strong>Accept <\/strong>button.&#160; This will be the <strong>NAME<\/strong> you use in following steps.&#160; Now, click the <strong>ADD <\/strong>button under VPN Policies, the following will appear:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2013\/10\/SNAGHTML143b7317.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"SNAGHTML143b7317\" style=\"border-top: 0px;border-right: 0px;border-bottom: 0px;padding-top: 0px;padding-left: 0px;border-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"SNAGHTML143b7317\" src=\"http:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2013\/10\/SNAGHTML143b7317_thumb.png\" width=\"451\" height=\"443\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Fill in your entries as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Leave Policy type as is<\/li>\n<li>Leave Authentication method as is<\/li>\n<li>For Name fill in the name that you will be giving the OTHER Sonicwall (the one at the other end of the VPN tunnel)<\/li>\n<li>Enter 0.0.0.0 for both the Primary and Secondary gateways.&#160; The reason for this is that you are setting up this unit to \u201clisten\u201d for the VPN connection and the remote end will pass this information through upon making the connection.<\/li>\n<li>Enter your desired \u201cshared secret\u201d for the encryption key.&#160; Make note of what you enter as you will need to enter the same key on the other Sonciwall.&#160; Longer, more random secrets are better than short, easily \u201cguessed\u2019 secrets.<\/li>\n<li>For the <strong>Local IKE ID<\/strong> select <strong>Firewall Identifier<\/strong> from the dropdown box then enter <strong>THIS <\/strong>Sonicwall\u2019s name.<\/li>\n<li>For the Peer<strong> ID<\/strong> select <strong>Firewall Identifier<\/strong> from the dropdown box then enter <strong>THE OTHER <\/strong>Sonicwall\u2019s name.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2013\/10\/SNAGHTML143afa30.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"SNAGHTML143afa30\" style=\"border-top: 0px;border-right: 0px;border-bottom: 0px;padding-top: 0px;padding-left: 0px;border-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"SNAGHTML143afa30\" src=\"http:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2013\/10\/SNAGHTML143afa30_thumb.png\" width=\"458\" height=\"406\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Click on the <strong>Network<\/strong> tab:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2013\/10\/SNAGHTML143cbc08.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"SNAGHTML143cbc08\" style=\"border-top: 0px;border-right: 0px;border-bottom: 0px;padding-top: 0px;padding-left: 0px;border-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"SNAGHTML143cbc08\" src=\"http:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2013\/10\/SNAGHTML143cbc08_thumb.png\" width=\"464\" height=\"418\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On the <strong>Local Networks<\/strong> select <strong>LAN Subnets<\/strong> from the dropdown list.<\/p>\n<p>On the <strong>Remote Networks<\/strong> select <strong>Create New Address Object<\/strong> and fill in the info for the LAN at the other end of the VPN similar to the following:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2013\/10\/SNAGHTML143fd6c8.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"SNAGHTML143fd6c8\" style=\"border-top: 0px;border-right: 0px;border-bottom: 0px;padding-top: 0px;padding-left: 0px;border-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"SNAGHTML143fd6c8\" src=\"http:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2013\/10\/SNAGHTML143fd6c8_thumb.png\" width=\"231\" height=\"244\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You should then have something like the following:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2013\/10\/SNAGHTML1440db89.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"SNAGHTML1440db89\" style=\"border-top: 0px;border-right: 0px;border-bottom: 0px;padding-top: 0px;padding-left: 0px;border-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"SNAGHTML1440db89\" src=\"http:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2013\/10\/SNAGHTML1440db89_thumb.png\" width=\"445\" height=\"399\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Click on the <strong>Proposals <\/strong>tab and set like the following:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2013\/10\/image20.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"image\" style=\"border-top: 0px;border-right: 0px;border-bottom: 0px;padding-top: 0px;padding-left: 0px;border-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2013\/10\/image_thumb20.png\" width=\"447\" height=\"392\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Click on the <strong>Advanced<\/strong> tab and set like the following:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2013\/10\/image21.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"image\" style=\"border-top: 0px;border-right: 0px;border-bottom: 0px;padding-top: 0px;padding-left: 0px;border-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2013\/10\/image_thumb21.png\" width=\"452\" height=\"397\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Click the <strong>OK <\/strong>button to save the settings.<\/p>\n<p>The new policy will be displayed on the <strong>VPN Policies<\/strong> page.&#160; Now, switch yourself over to the other Sonicwall and repeat the same steps with the following differences:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2013\/10\/image22.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"image\" style=\"border-top: 0px;border-right: 0px;border-bottom: 0px;padding-top: 0px;padding-left: 0px;border-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2013\/10\/image_thumb22.png\" width=\"462\" height=\"399\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Enter the WAN IP address OR the FQDN of the master Sonicwall as the <strong>Primary<\/strong> gateway.&#160; Remember, the Sonicwall you are configuring is the initiator of the VPN connection so it has to know what it needs to connect to.<\/p>\n<p>On the <strong>Network <\/strong>tab you do the same thing as you did the first time around only this time the <strong>Remote Network <\/strong>will be the LAN behind the master Sonicwall.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2013\/10\/image23.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"image\" style=\"border-top: 0px;border-right: 0px;border-bottom: 0px;padding-top: 0px;padding-left: 0px;border-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2013\/10\/image_thumb23.png\" width=\"468\" height=\"365\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Proposals<\/strong> should match the other side:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2013\/10\/image24.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"image\" style=\"border-top: 0px;border-right: 0px;border-bottom: 0px;padding-top: 0px;padding-left: 0px;border-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2013\/10\/image_thumb24.png\" width=\"467\" height=\"411\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On the <strong>Advanced <\/strong>tab the only change is to ensure the <strong>Enable Keep Alive<\/strong> is ticked.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2013\/10\/image25.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"image\" style=\"border-top: 0px;border-right: 0px;border-bottom: 0px;padding-top: 0px;padding-left: 0px;border-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2013\/10\/image_thumb25.png\" width=\"471\" height=\"393\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Click the <strong>OK<\/strong> button to save the policy.<\/p>\n<p>Assuming you\u2019ve made no typo\u2019s and all is well with your WAN connections, the VPN tunnel should come up on both Sonicwalls.&#160; The tunnel is up when both Sonicwalls display the green ball icon on the VPN policy.&#160; You will also see tunnel information appear under the <strong>Currently Active VPN Tunnels<\/strong> when a tunnel is established:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2013\/10\/image26.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"image\" style=\"border-top: 0px;border-right: 0px;border-bottom: 0px;padding-top: 0px;padding-left: 0px;border-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2013\/10\/image_thumb26.png\" width=\"480\" height=\"424\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Once your VPN policies are created you can make modifications that expand what traffic is allowed to flow over the tunnel.&#160; In this case we just allowed traffic on each primary LAN behind each Sonicwall to reach the primary LAN behind the other Sonicwall.&#160; We set this up on the <strong>Networks<\/strong> portion of each policy and bound the policies to the LAN subnets at each end.&#160; If you want to expand to allow access to more subnets behind a Sonicwall then all you have to do is create an <strong>Address Object<\/strong>&#160; on each firewall that includes the subnets you want to access and reference that object instead of the one used when first setting up the tunnel.&#160; Just remember that whatever you reference as the <strong>LOCAL<\/strong> networks on one side of the tunnel has to also be referenced as the <strong>REMOTE<\/strong> networks on the other side of the tunnel.&#160; An example of how multiple networks display under a VPN policy follows:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2013\/10\/image27.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"image\" style=\"border-top: 0px;border-right: 0px;border-bottom: 0px;padding-top: 0px;padding-left: 0px;border-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2013\/10\/image_thumb27.png\" width=\"481\" height=\"54\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As you can see, this tunnel knows about 3 separate networks at the other end.<\/p>\n<p>I use this procedure all the time and have many, many site-to-site VPN\u2019s in the field configured in this manner.&#160; Of course, as I mentioned up front, there are many other methods available to configure the tunnels, including the new IKE v2 process available with the latest SonicOS firmware, and each method has its advantages and disadvantages.&#160;
