has been messing about as of late with name changes and service changes.\u00a0 SkyDrive became OneDrive and with that name change also came a number of updates to the service.\u00a0 But, as usual, there is still some confusion about what is what.\u00a0 I know that the whole OneDrive thing can confuse people so what follows is my short primer.<\/p>\n<p>There are <em>two<\/em> <strong>OneDrive<\/strong> products available and while they are the \u201csame\u201d \u2013 your \u201cUSB drive in the cloud\u201d &#8212; they are also very different.<\/p>\n<p><strong>OneDrive<\/strong> (with no following qualifier) is the <em>personal<\/em> Cloud storage offering from Microsoft.\u00a0 This is the OneDrive that is tied to <em>you<\/em>, personally, and has nothing to do (directly) with O365.\u00a0 It truly is a \u201cUSB drive in the cloud\u201d that you can use to store many different files.\u00a0 It can be linked to your local PC (Windows 7, 8 and 8.1) like so:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2014\/05\/image.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding-top: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;border-width: 0px\" title=\"image\" alt=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2014\/05\/image_thumb.png\" width=\"441\" height=\"292\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2014\/05\/image1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding-top: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;border-width: 0px\" title=\"image\" alt=\"image\" no particular organization is imposed.<\/p>\n<p>It is also linkable to your tablet or phone, this is what I have on my Samsung Galaxy Tab 2:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2014\/05\/Screenshot_2014-05-04-08-38-42.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding-top: 0px;padding-left: you can access OneDrive using your browser as demo\u2019d below:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2014\/05\/image2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding-top: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;border-width: 0px\" title=\"image\" alt=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2014\/05\/image_thumb2.png\" width=\"453\" height=\"316\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As you can see, the files are the same on PC and tablet and web.\u00a0 In fact, I used OneDrive to transfer the screenshots from the tablet to LiveWriter for this blog post.\u00a0 Simple, fast, easy to use.\u00a0 I won\u2019t detail storage available and such as wha ever I detail today (early May 2014) will probably be out of date by the time you read this post.\u00a0\u00a0 Go <a href=\"https:\/\/onedrive.live.com\/about\/en-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a> to read more and get your OneDrive subscription.<\/p>\n<p><strong>OneDrive for Business<\/strong> is a specialized <strong>SharePoint Online <\/strong>library that is provided via your O365 subscription.\u00a0 While it can do many of the same things that your personal OneDrive does, it imposes a layer of \u201cmanagement\u201d on your files that does not exist in your \u201cpersonal\u201d OneDrive (hey, it <em>is<\/em> SharePoint, after all \u2026).\u00a0 OneDrive for Business shows up in the links in your O365 website, here\u2019s what mine looks like:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2014\/05\/image3.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding-top: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;border-width: 0px\" title=\"image\" alt=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2014\/05\/image_thumb3.png\" width=\"459\" height=\"318\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And when I click on \u201cShared With Everyone\u201d:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2014\/05\/image4.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding-top: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;border-width: 0px\" title=\"image\" alt=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2014\/05\/image_thumb4.png\" width=\"458\" height=\"254\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As in any other SharePoint library there is additional data (metadata) tagged to the files I have in OneDrive and additional info\/control is available by clicking on the ellipses:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2014\/05\/image5.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding-top: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;border-width: 0px\" title=\"image\" alt=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2014\/05\/image_thumb5.png\" width=\"460\" height=\"280\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As you can see, <em>very<\/em> SharePoint-y!\u00a0 While this is a SharePoint library it is not a part of the SharePoint sites that exist elsewhere in your O365, it is a standalone storage piece that is provided for <em>your<\/em> use as a part of O365.\u00a0 And just like the personal OneNote detailed earlier in this post, you can have OneNote for Business \u201csync\u201d the library with a local copy on your PC so that you can have the library with you wherever you go regardless of \u201cconnectivity\u201d between you and O365.\u00a0 You do this by clicking on the sync icon:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2014\/05\/image6.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding-top: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;border-width: 0px\" title=\"image\" alt=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2014\/05\/image_thumb6.png\" width=\"466\" height=\"279\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2014\/05\/image7.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding-top: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;border-width: 0px\" title=\"image\" alt=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2014\/05\/image_thumb7.png\" width=\"469\" height=\"269\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2014\/05\/image8.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding-top: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;border-width: 0px\" title=\"image\" alt=\"image\" href=\"https:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2014\/05\/image9.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding-top: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;border-width: 0px\" title=\"image\" alt=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2014\/05\/image_thumb9.png\" width=\"476\" height=\"305\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2014\/05\/image10.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding-top: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;border-width: 0px\" title=\"image\" alt=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2014\/05\/image_thumb10.png\" width=\"483\" height=\"303\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And now I have a \u201clocal\u201d yet sync\u2019d copy of my OneDrive for Business.<\/p>\n<p>OneDrive for Business adds a few tricks to the mix by giving you some interesting choices from the \u201cnew\u201d icon:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2014\/05\/image11.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding-top: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;border-width: 0px\" title=\"image\" alt=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2014\/05\/image_thumb11.png\" width=\"492\" height=\"316\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The choices are tied in with the WebApps in O365 so that you can create standard Office documents on the fly from your PC, tablet or phone and you don\u2019t need to have the software loaded locally to work.\u00a0 Clicking on \u201cWord document\u201d resulted in this prompt:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2014\/05\/image12.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding-top: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;border-width: 0px\" title=\"image\" alt=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2014\/05\/image_thumb12.png\" width=\"340\" height=\"94\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And when I clicked OK I got to here:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2014\/05\/image13.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding-top: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;border-width: 0px\" title=\"image\" alt=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2014\/05\/image_thumb13.png\" width=\"486\" height=\"266\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I enter some text then when I go to save I find out something else that is cool:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2014\/05\/image14.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding-top: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;border-width: 0px\" title=\"image\" alt=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2014\/05\/image_thumb14.png\" width=\"491\" height=\"209\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Pretty neat.\u00a0 And here is the file showing in OneDrive for Business:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2014\/05\/image15.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding-top: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;border-width: 0px\" title=\"image\" alt=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2014\/05\/image_thumb15.png\" width=\"498\" height=\"202\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And here it is locally (and it just \u201cappeared\u201d, I didn\u2019t have to sync):<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2014\/05\/image16.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding-top: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;border-width: 0px\" title=\"image\" alt=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2014\/05\/image_thumb16.png\" width=\"500\" height=\"173\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>By definition, this is also available on tablet and phone via your browser.\u00a0 There is also a OneDrive for Business App for iOS but, sadly, not Android (as of early May 2014) that works pretty much the same way as the desktop sync detailed above.<\/p>\n<p>So there you have the basic differences between <strong>OneDrive<\/strong> and <strong>OneDrive for Business<\/strong>.\u00a0 They are the same but very different and both are very useful in their own way.\u00a0 Take advantage of the Cloud storage Microsoft gives
