The end result is you can run out of space on your media even though your jobs are set to \u201coverwrite\u201d older media.<\/p>\n<p>The biggest cause of this kind of problem is inconsistent results with full backups.&#160; BackupExec will NOT delete old data sets, even if they are expired, if more recent full backups have not been successful nor will it let you overwrite those media sets.<\/p>\n<p>To force the clean-up of old, expired data you need to do the following (all of this is predicated on BackupExec 2012, older versions may operate differently).<\/p>\n<p>Go to your storage:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2013\/10\/image.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"image\" style=\"padding-top: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2013\/10\/image_thumb.png\" width=\"533\" height=\"208\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Click in to it then into the <strong>Backup Sets<\/strong> \u2026<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2013\/10\/image1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"image\" style=\"padding-top: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2013\/10\/image_thumb1.png\" width=\"534\" height=\"370\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Scroll down to the bottom then highlight the items you want to delete \u2026<\/p>\n<p>&#160;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2013\/10\/image2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"image\" style=\"padding-top: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2013\/10\/image_thumb2.png\" width=\"541\" height=\"429\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Right-click the select <strong>Delete<\/strong> \u2026 then start answering questions \u2026<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2013\/10\/image3.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"image\" style=\"padding-top: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2013\/10\/image_thumb3.png\" width=\"360\" height=\"172\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Click <strong>Yes to all<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Depending on what is in the backup set you want to delete you may get prompted as follows:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2013\/10\/image4.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"image\" style=\"padding-top: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2013\/10\/image_thumb4.png\" width=\"543\" height=\"482\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I want the data deleted so click <strong>Delete this set and all dependent backup sets<\/strong> \u2026<\/p>\n<p>&#160;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2013\/10\/image5.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"image\" style=\"padding-top: 0px;padding-left: 0px;margin: 0px;padding-right: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2013\/10\/image_thumb5.png\" width=\"244\" height=\"67\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#160;<\/p>\n<p>This can take some time.&#160; The green progress bar will appear at some point and slowly update, be patient.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2013\/10\/image6.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"image\" style=\"padding-top: 0px;padding-left: 0px;margin: 0px;padding-right: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2013\/10\/image_thumb6.png\" width=\"244\" height=\"89\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The process will repeat as BackupExec rolls through the backup sets you have selected, possibly prompting again for your input on deletion.&#160; The process can be quite lengthy as data is being deleted from storage media (like the QNAP) as well as catalogues are being pruned of references to the datasets.&#160; Removing a large amount of old data can easily take an hour or two so be prepared.<\/p>\n<p>Once the process completes you will see that space has been freed on your storage media.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2013\/10\/image7.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"image\" style=\"padding-top: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/thebeagle.itgroove.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/thebeagle\/2013\/10\/image_thumb7.png\" width=\"629\" height=\"50\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I was at 4GB free on the QNAP before the clean-up.&#160;
